Origin & History

The Tibetan Terrier, as its name suggests, has Tibetan roots. The breed came through the English doctor Dr. med. Greig, who operated a well-off Tibetan lady in India in 1922, to Europe. In gratitude for the successful operation, the woman gave her a puppy. This golden-white puppy started Dr. Greig her own breed, which became known as "of Lamleh". The recognition of the breed under the name Tibet Terrier then took place in 1930. In 1939, the Tibetan Terrier came to Germany. A Berliner woman bought two bitches, which were already covered and founded a kennel under the name "von Tiergartenbrück".

Racial features Tibetan Terrier

The Tibetan Terrier has a robust physique with a square silhouette. The medium sized dog is strong without being heavy-skinned. According to the FCI standard, the males are between 35 cm and 40 cm tall and weigh about 15 kg. The bitches differ only slightly from this size and weigh about 11 kg. The Tibetan Terrier is very agile and powerful. That's why it is well suited for long hikes and walks. His hunting instinct is weak, which is why he can walk well without a leash.

A special breed feature are the flat and very wide paws. This special shape of the paws allows good movement in the snow. Since the Tibetan Terrier was used as a shepherd dog in his native Tibet, he also has movable claws, which facilitate the movement in the mountains and on smooth surfaces.

Tibetan Terrier breed features

Another breed feature that is adapted to the climatic conditions in Tibet is the double-skin. It consists of dense and lush top coat and a petticoat of fine and woolly fur. This coat protects the dog from strong cold, but also from strong sunlight and sandstorms. That's why the Tibetan Terrier tolerates temperatures between + 25 ° and -40 ° Celsius. The color of the coat varies. All colors except liver or chocolate brown are allowed according to the FCI standard.
