In this article I have put together all the information and facts as well as links that you need as a dog owner in the current situation of the corona crisis.
I particularly highlighted the issues of “Corona quarantine and isolation” because there is important information here that we dog owners should and must know.
In addition, I conducted some interviews with affected readers on this topic in order to be able to include direct experiences. Here I received a lot of information that I didn’t even know before. So these were really totally helpful and valuable for this article!
Concern number 1
Can I infect my dog with Corona?
For some of my interviewees, this concern was really great in their situation. The last thing you want is to make the dog sick yourself or if you don’t know whether the disease will affect it.
It then feels even more like an uncertain danger and a dark cloud over everything, I think.
That’s why I want to calm you down here as much as possible!
The unanimous answer to this question:
All tests and studies on the subject of “infection of dogs with Covid-19” have shown that dogs have a very low susceptibility to the virus . This means that it is very unlikely that you will infect your dog if you have tested positive for Corona yourself.
So you can cuddle with your dog and don’t need to keep a safe distance from him. Phew, how lucky!
There is also no evidence that dogs or cats spread the virus. ( Source FLI )
Still, there are a few things to consider if someone walks your dog while you’re in quarantine or testing positive.
Concern number 2
lockdown, quarantine and isolation: when can I go for a walk with my dog?
First, let’s clarify the various terms:
lockdown
Restrictive measures that are enacted nationwide or in your state to stop the spread of the corona virus and apply to everyone
quarantine
Isolation of a suspect at home for up to 14 days She either had contact with a person who tested positive, took part in a superspreader event or comes from a risk area.
isolation
Officially ordered measure for a person with confirmed corona infection. This takes place at home or in the hospital, depending on the severity.
Back to the question:
The biggest difference for us dog owners here is that we are allowed to continue walking our dog in lockdown, as this falls under the “valid reason to leave the house”.
Of course we keep a distance of 1.5-2 meters from everyone else when walking. And wash our hands thoroughly afterwards. Everything is already clear, right?
But in quarantine and isolation, we are under no circumstances allowed to leave the house.
Say someone else – a healthy person – needs to walk your dog for you.
We’re not even allowed into the garden. But if you have a garden, your dog is of course much easier to deal with.
Edit: The handling of dog walks in quarantine currently differs from state to state. Therefore, you should briefly discuss this information with your health department.
Concern number 3
There are so many search results! On which pages can I get all my question marks answered?
I’m not going to talk about this worry now, but here are the most important links to all the questions you are currently asking yourself:
In order to get a clear picture of the current Corona situation, the website of the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) is the first choice.
Concern number 4
My throat is scratching. When do I start showing corona symptoms?
Let’s continue with what other special information there is for dog owners and what my interviewees have told me!
Concern number 5
Who else in my environment is affected?
From my interviews and my research, I really learned a lot about quarantine and isolation. The information from my interview partners in particular changed my expectations, should I be affected soon.
In the next few chapters, I have arranged all of this information for you in questions and answers.
Does your partner / family have to be in quarantine / isolation?
If you are in quarantine yourself, your partner and family can continue to behave normally. They are not automatically quarantined with you. That said, they can run your dog and run errands too.
This is different with isolation . If you have tested positive for COVID-19 yourself, all members of your household are direct first-degree contact persons. And they are automatically in quarantine and are not allowed to leave the house.
What are contact persons, who do I have to report and who is at risk?
If you test positive for COVID-19 or have been in contact with an infected person, you must report your first-degree contacts to the health department.
This is regulated somewhat differently from state to state. But in principle it is of course absolutely essential that you let all those who are a first-degree contact person know!
Apart from the money and work-from-home problems, I find living with my dog during the quarantine is quite easy. We have more time to play with each other, cook more good food, and find more creative ways to make fun while all we can do is staying in the house. Maybe it’s not as bad as people think (as long as you maintain a stable financial status lol)
