Origin & History

Probably the Bichon à poil frisé comes from the Canary Islands. In the 14th century, the Italians are said to have brought the breed to mainland Europe. The ancestors of the Bichon à poil frisé were already known and widespread in antiquity from the region of today's Egypt. In the 1930s, the breed enjoyed great popularity in France and Belgium, in Germany, the first litter is dated to the year 1955. The name Bichon à poil frisé translates as "curled lap dog" or "curly lion dog". Today the breed book of the breed is kept by France and Belgium, where also the origin of today's breed form can be found.
